About Your Trainer

Our trainer, Justin Cournoyea, has been working professionally as a dog trainer and behavior expert for well over a decade. In 2005 Justin started off doing only home visits for aggressive dogs. He then started teaching classes with Midwest Animal Rescue in 2008.

Justin’s real skill is working with reactive dogs and nervous reactions. As he puts it “There is rarely true aggression in the domestic dog.” Most reactivity comes from a lack of confidence, fear, and the feeling of not being safe in an environment.

When asked, he considers himself more of an interpreter for people than a trainer. We here at Oneka can not deny the results of his methods. Over the years he has continued helping rescues, fosters, and families having issues with their dog’s behavior.

While Justin has the methods and tools he prefers, he is well-versed in whatever tools you would like to use. Your comfort with your training tool means a lot to him. This includes pinch collars, martingale collars, gentle leaders, harnesses, and remote collars (Only upon request)

Group
Training

  • Family

    Training with Oneka Pet Resort is a team effort with the whole family being involved. Because training is “Simplistically Complicated” we want to make sure the whole family understands these teaching methods.

  • Behavior

    Training isn’t just for your dog. We will show you how your attitude, body position, and other cues cause specific behavior.

  • Commands

    Each class will focus on specific commands including Sit, Down, Focus (Name Game), Wait, and Leave It. If the group is progressing quickly we may add additional commands to the class.

  • Activities

    Both you and your dog will work together to work on activities including Group Play, Loose Leash Walking, and Recall.

  • Reinforcement

    Positive Reinforcement and Correction methods are the best way to teach basic behavioral skills. We work closely with the family to teach them methods to teach their dog in a positive environment. That’s right we want the family (kids included) to join us so everyone knows how to interact with your dog.

1 On 1
Training

  • Goal

    We will need a list of issues or behaviors you want to work on, and that becomes our goal. It's also great to know is you want your dog to be Social, Obedient, Happy/Playful, etc.

  • Dog Behavior Modification

    Behavior identification and ultimately modification are the keys to correcting your specific defined issues.

  • Owner Behavior Modification

    Our behaviors as dog owners can cause certain behaviors in our dogs. Our goal is to help correct any human behaviors that contribute to issues your dog is experiencing.

  • Family

    When working on issues the whole family needs to be involved. Calm, consistent and controlled environments are the best for dogs to learn new behaviors, and ensuring the whole family is doing everything similar is the key to successful change.

  • What This Isn't

    We focus on training great family dogs, so we will not work on any hunting, agility, or similar activities.

Board and Train

  • What is Board and Train

    Our programs are centered around that your dog needs to succeed. Your dog will board will be with us at Oneka Monday through Friday, and will go home with you on the weekends. We will train your dog during their stay with us. This isn't your typical Board and Train.

  • What makes our programs different

    Owners are part of the training! Your dog will be with us at Oneka Monday through Friday, and then home with you on the weekends with some homework. During traditional board and train programs the dog builds a working relationship with the trainer but not fully with the owner which is why we want your involvement during the process.

  • Program 1 - Foundations

    This program is a 3-week program to teach your dog how to be a well-rounded home dog. Your dog will learn how to have good manners while greeting new people and dogs, how to control their excitement, and basic commands. We will work on making the basic commands as hard as we can, like practicing them in a group of dogs. Perfecting things like recalls even when highly distracted.

  • Program 2 - Reactive

    This program is a 4-week program designed for fear-reactive dogs. We focus on building your dog’s confidence. We will expose your dog to things that make them nervous and control it such as people, dogs, or the environment itself. We work on finding out how big your dog’s reactivity bubble is and slowly shrink it. With the hopes of being able to at the least be off-leash with Justin’s dog Bae. Who has been trained on how to be around fear-reactive dogs.

  • What this is not

    Oneka Does not train hunting dogs or teach protection dog training. These programs are not designed for human aggressive dogs. Please see our 1-on-1 training to help with that behavior.

  • How do I get started

    All dogs participating in our board and train program must be 10 months of age or older, and up to date on their Rabies, Distemper, and Bordetella vaccines. If your dog has not been with us before, we do require them to attend an evaluation day. This way we can get to know your dog and have them comfortable with us and the environment before we jump into boarding. At pickup on your evaluation day, Justin will meet with you to see which of our programs best suits your needs.
